For your Lenten pleasure, Eric Sorensen of Rock Bottom West Des Moines and I hit the brewhouse on Jan. 4 to concoct the now second annual batch of my Illuminator Doppelbock.
Truly, it was a throw of the dice when I approached Eric with my recipe and hair-brained “Diary of a Part-Time Monk” historical investigation plan a year and a half ago, but he went for it, and so did the public. Spurred by a little media attention when I fasted on this juice for 46 days like the storied 17th Century monks had done, it was all Eric could do to take the pressure from the taplines. This year, we made 14 barrels instead of eight, to stretch it a little further.
If you’re on the ball and local, Illuminator will be a part of tomorrow night’s (Feb. 21) Brewer’s Dinner. If you miss that, it goes on tap Thursday, Feb. 23, at 6 p.m.
