Appetite for Hops

Guns ‘n Roses’ “Night Train” has spawned two beer names for me.

The first was my homebrewed Russian Imperial Stout, Molotov Cock’d Ale, which emerged from the line:

“I got a Molotov cocktail with a match to go

I smoke my cigarette with style”

I don’t smoke, but I always liked that line, and I thought a little spelling tweak would make a cool beer.

And then.

If you’re in the Denver area, you can taste another “Appetite for Destruction”-inspired beer at Yak & Yeti in Arvada. Right now.

Here’s how the lyrics go:

“Well I’m a west coast struttin’
One bad mother
Got a rattlesnake suitcase
Under my arm
Said I’m a mean machine
Been drinkin’ gasoline
And honey you can make my motor hum”

That's Adam on the left. I named his beer.

In my brain, I always heard, and preferred, “I’m a west coast glutton,” and thought it would be a great name for an in-your-face double IPA. I suggested the beer to Y&Y’s Adam Draeger some time ago, and yesterday, he tapped the beer, “a double IPA with a butt-load of hops.” (my only recipe input)

Weighing in at 10% ABV and featuring Cascade and Zythos hops that are calculated at 150 IBUs, Draeger describes West Coast Glutton as “a citrus-infused hoptastic taste sensation” that skews red with a bold malt backbone.

Good job, Adam. I like words like hoptastic. And thanks for brewing the beer. Perhaps some nice Beer Angel will send me a growler so I can see for myself if this beer is as good as its name.
