I was sorta behind in checking out my brother’s sweet motorcycle, so to kill two birds with one stone, we trekked our way to Norsemen Brewing Company in Elk Horn, Iowa, for pizza, beer and conversation.
Norsemen opened within the last few weeks, and they looked to be a little understaffed for the pressure put on by their thirsty customers. It’s a small place with artisan pizza and gelato, as well as beers. On our visit, there were only two house brews on offer, a Kolsch-style ale and a graham cracker sour porter, with a sign noting that a pale ale was on the way. While the porter was billed as “sour,” both beers were actually sour and not in the “La Folie Kicks Ass” kind of sour, if you catch my drift. There’s definitely a sanitation issue straight out of the gates, and I hope these guys can sort it out ASAP, because another small brewery in the western part of Iowa is a good thing. But the beer has to be good, so as not to turn newbies off entirely.
Thank goodness they had some good guest beers available. I switched to Peace Tree’s Hop Wrangler and my day got better straight away:
